What does it mean to be sustainable?
Within a single generation, be able to meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations in terms of social, economic and environmental quality.
With a little careful planning we can all make a big difference to the impact we have on our environment. Sustainable design is a simple yet very important approach to creating unique and appropriate materials that respect our environment and society
People often think ‘If it’s green it’s going to cost more.’ This need not be the case. Sustainable design looks at how to make best use of materials to reduce energy consumption, pollution and waste. This may be done by using less paper, less ink and less chemical processes—which all help to reduce expenses and environmental costs.
Sustainable design considers not only the aesthetics of the finished item but the project as a whole: Before production, during production and after production.
Our checklist
> Ask why. Why is this the best method?
> Ask how. How can we lessen impact?
> Ask what. What are the impacts of doing this?
> Design for re-use/longevity.
> Design cyclically not linearly.
> Choose recycled/non-toxic materials.
> Minimize waste. (e.g. use entire press sheet)
> Minimize ink coverage.
> Choose local vendors that use renewable energy.
> Encourage others to design sustainably.
